What is Omega 3?
Omega 3 is a fatty acid that originates from certain fish and plant-based sources, such as vegetable oils, nuts and seeds. Oily fish, such as sardines, salmon and mackerel, contain the most Omega 3. White fish and shellfish also contain Omega 3 but in smaller quantities. There are several types of Omega 3, with the three most prominent ones being alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ALA is essential for fundamental health but it can’t be produced in our bodies, therefore we rely on consuming the fat through our diet. EPA and DHA are both long-chain fatty acids that are created from the ALA in our bodies.
Benefits of Omega 3
Omega 3 contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels and normal functioning of the heart. It is well known that Omega 3 can help to reduce triglycerides, a fat that enters out blood after we have eaten, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Maternal intake of Omega 3 also contributes to the development of the foetus’ eye and normal brain development of both the foetus and breastfed infants.
Our Omega 3 soft gels
Our soft gels contain a formulation of DHA and EPA, contributing to 550mg Omega 3. The British Dietetic Association recommend a daily dose of 450mg combined between EPA and DHA, with no safety concerns of an upper limit.
